  1. 1. Define what counts as a word

A word is typically a sequence of non-whitespace characters. However, hyphenated words, contractions (don't), and numbers can be counted differently. Define your rules before counting. Most tools split on whitespace by default.

    入力
    Hello world don't
    输出
3 words (default) or 4 (split on apostrophes)
  2. 2. Count the metrics

Count characters (with or without spaces), words, lines (split on newlines), and sentences (split on .!?). Each metric has different rules. Character count may include or exclude whitespace; line count may include or exclude empty lines.

    入力
    Hello world\nSecond line
    输出
    chars: 18 | words: 4 | lines: 2
  3. 3. Report and use the statistics

Display the counts clearly. For writing, word count is most common. For code, line count is common. For tweets or SMS, character count matters. Use the appropriate metric for your context.

    入力
    text statistics
    输出
    words: 4, chars: 18, lines: 2, sentences: 2

明確に定義されたルールに基づく、単語数・文字数・行数・文数の正確なカウント。

よくあるエラー

Word count differs from word processor
Word processors may count hyphenated words as one or two, and may handle punctuation differently. Align your rules with the target tool.
Character count includes or excludes spaces inconsistently
Specify whether spaces are counted. Most tools offer both options.

トラブルシューティング指引

  • If the count seems wrong, check for hidden characters like zero-width spaces or BOM.
  • For CJK text, 'word' counting is different; characters are often more meaningful than words.

セキュリティ上の制限

  • Text counting is a pure analysis with no security implications.
