TASK
Verify that encode-decode round-trips losslessly
Confirm that decoding then re-encoding (or vice versa) returns the exact original input, catching silent data corruption from wrong alphabets or padding.
- 1
A correct encoding is a bijection: decode(encode(x)) == x for all valid x. Testing the round-trip catches wrong alphabet choices, padding bugs, charset mismatches, and truncation — the most common silent data-loss bugs.
- 2 Base64 Encoder →
Start with your original text or hex. Encode it to Base64.
- 3 Base64 Decoder →
Decode the Base64 output back to bytes. Compare with the original — any difference means the encoding parameters (alphabet, padding) are inconsistent.
- 4 base64-encode → base64-decode
Run the dedicated verify chain which automates the round-trip and reports pass/fail, so you do not have to eyeball the comparison.
Frequently asked questions
- The round-trip passes for ASCII but fails for Unicode — why?
- The encode step may be treating the input as Latin-1 bytes while decode interprets as UTF-8 (or vice versa). Ensure both steps use the same charset — typically UTF-8 for modern text.
- Should I test encode-then-decode or decode-then-encode?
- Test both directions. encode→decode verifies your encoder is correct; decode→encode verifies your decoder handles all valid inputs. Some decoders are lenient (accept malformed input) which only the second test catches.
