Questions fréquentes
- Is MD5 safe for passwords?
- No. MD5 is broken for security purposes and is provided only for checksums and legacy use. For password hashing use bcrypt, scrypt, or Argon2.
- Which algorithm should I use?
- Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 for any security-sensitive use case. SHA-1 is deprecated for collision resistance. MD5 is only for non-security checksums.
- What output formats are available?
- Lowercase hex (default), uppercase hex, and Base64. Hex is common for checksums; Base64 is shorter and used in JWT signatures and X.509 certificates.
- Is the hash computed locally?
- Yes. SHA-1/256/512 use the browser's native Web Crypto API (crypto.subtle.digest); MD5 uses spark-md5. No data leaves your browser.
- Why does the empty string have a non-empty hash?
- Hash functions process fixed-size blocks. The empty input still produces a digest because the function applies padding to a zero-length message. SHA-256 of '' is e3b0c442...b855.
- Can I hash binary files?
- Yes. Use the file picker to load a file; its bytes are hashed directly without text decoding, so images, archives, and binaries all work.
