Protocol Architecture
QUIC is a general-purpose transport protocol running over UDP, providing reliable, ordered streams. Each connection can have multiple bidirectional and unidirectional streams. Frames carry stream data, acknowledgments, flow control, and connection management. The protocol integrates TLS 1.3 for mandatory encryption of all payload data. Connection IDs decouple routing from IP addresses, enabling migration.

QUIC implements its own congestion control (typically Cubic or BBR) and loss recovery, independent of TCP. Acknowledgment ranges support out-of-order ACKs efficiently. Packet pacing and ECN support improve fairness and latency. The spin bit exposes RTT measurement for passive observers. Version negotiation allows future protocol evolution. QUIC is defined across RFCs 9000-9002 and 9221.
