MIME Typen Abschließen List

Comprehensive media Typ list mit Typ, subtype, und gemein Datei extensions.

Top-Level Categories

MIME types are organized into top-level categories that indicate the general nature of the data. The text category covers human-readable formats, application covers structured data, image covers raster and vector images, audio and video cover time-based media, and multipart covers composite messages. The font and model categories were added later for specialized uses. Each category has many registered and vendor subtypes.

Structured Suffix Syntax

Structured syntax suffixes like +json and +xml indicate the underlying serialization of a subtype. For example, application/manifest+json is a JSON-structured manifest. This convention lets generic processors handle the structured layer without knowing the specific subtype. The suffix is optional and not all registered types use it, but it improves interoperability when present.

Sniffing and Security

Content type sniffing, where a server or client guesses the type from bytes, is a security risk because it can cause a browser to execute content as a different type. The X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff header disables sniffing for a response. Servers should always send accurate Content-Type headers with appropriate charset parameters. Relying on file extensions alone is insufficient because extensions can be misleading.
