BLAKE2 Design
BLAKE2 is a cryptographic hash function based on the ChaCha round function, optimized for software speed. It comes in BLAKE2b (64-bit, up to 64-byte output) and BLAKE2s (32-bit, up to 32-byte output) variants. BLAKE2 also supports keyed hashing (MAC) and salt/personalization parameters without separate constructions. It is faster than MD5 while providing security comparable to SHA-3.
- BLAKE2b
- 64-bit words, 12 rounds
- BLAKE2s
- 32-bit words, 10 rounds
- keyed
- Built-in MAC mode
64-byte max output 32-byte max output no HMAC needed BLAKE3 and Parallelism
BLAKE3 extends BLAKE2 with a Merkle tree structure enabling parallel and incremental hashing. It produces an XOF (extendable output) by default and supports keyed hashing. BLAKE3 achieves near-linear speedup on multi-core systems and is the fastest modern hash on parallel hardware. The tree structure also enables streaming verification of large files without rehashing entirely.
