How to Convert CSV to Markdown Table

Transform CSV data directly into a Markdown table for documentation and READMEs.

Problem

You have CSV data and want to present it as a Markdown table in documentation.

Prerequisites

  • Understanding of CSV format
  • Understanding of Markdown tables

Steps

  1. 1. Parse the CSV

Read the CSV file, treating the first row as the header. Parse subsequent rows as data. Handle quoted fields and embedded commas using a proper CSV parser.

    Input
    Name,Age,City\nAlice,30,NYC\nBob,25,LA
    Output
    headers + 2 rows
  2. 2. Map to Markdown table format

Convert the header row to a Markdown header with pipes. Add a separator row with dashes. Convert each data row to a Markdown table row. Escape any pipes in the data with \|.

    Input
    parsed CSV
    Output
    | Name | Age | City |\n|---|---|---|\n| Alice | 30 | NYC |\n| Bob | 25 | LA |
  3. 3. Verify and use

Preview the Markdown table to confirm it renders correctly. Check that all data is present and properly aligned. Copy the Markdown into your documentation file.

    Input
    Markdown table
    Output
    verified table

Expected result

A Markdown table that accurately represents the CSV data.

Common errors

Commas in quoted CSV fields create extra columns
Use a proper CSV parser that respects quoting rules. Do not split on commas naively.
Pipes in data break the table
Escape pipes in cell content with \| before generating the Markdown.

Troubleshooting

  • If the table is misaligned, check for inconsistent column counts in the CSV.
  • If special characters render incorrectly, ensure proper escaping.

Security limits

  • CSV to Markdown is a text conversion. No security risks, but sanitize any HTML in CSV cells if rendering in a context that allows HTML.
