How to Generate Barcodes

Create various barcode formats (Code128, EAN13, UPC) from data.

Problem

You need to generate a barcode for a product ID or tracking number.

Prerequisites

  • Understanding of barcode formats
  • Knowledge of barcode constraints

Steps

  1. 1. Choose the barcode format

Different formats serve different purposes: Code128 (general purpose, alphanumeric), EAN-13 (retail products, 13 digits), UPC-A (US retail, 12 digits), Code39 (industrial, alphanumeric). Choose based on your use case and data type.

    Input
    format: EAN-13, data: 4006381333931
    Output
    format selected
  2. 2. Validate the data for the format

Each format has constraints: EAN-13 requires exactly 12 digits plus a check digit, UPC-A requires 11 digits plus a check digit, Code128 has length limits. Validate the data meets the format requirements before generating.

    Input
    EAN-13: 4006381333931
    Output
12 digits + check digit: valid
  3. 3. Generate and render the barcode

Generate the barcode as an image (PNG, SVG) with appropriate bar width and height. Include the human-readable text below the bars if needed. Test with a barcode scanner to verify it reads correctly.

    Input
    validated data + format
    Output
    barcode image

Expected result

A scannable barcode image in the specified format.

Common errors

Check digit incorrect
The last digit of EAN/UPC codes is a computed check digit. Use a generator that calculates it automatically, or compute it manually using the standard algorithm.
Barcode too narrow to scan
Increase the bar width and height. Ensure the quiet zone (white space) on both sides is sufficient for the scanner.

Troubleshooting

  • If scanning fails, check the quiet zone, contrast, and print quality.
  • Verify the check digit is correct for the data.

Security limits

  • Barcodes are a physical encoding with no security properties. They can be copied or forged.
