z-base-32

z-base-32 is the Base32 variant designed by Zooko O'Whielacron, using an optimized alphabet that prioritizes human-readable characters to reduce transcription errors.

Purpose

It maximizes readability and error tolerance where binary data must be entered by hand or read aloud.

Mechanism

It uses the same 5-bit grouping as RFC 4648 Base32, but the alphabet is reordered to ybndrfg8ejkmcpqxot1uwisza345h769, placing easily confused characters at low-frequency positions.

Use cases

  • One-time password backups
  • Manual entry of keys
  • Voice-readable encoding
