XML-RPC
XML-RPC is a remote procedure call protocol that carries XML-encoded calls over HTTP, defining XML representations for simple types and struct/array.
Purpose
It encodes parameters and results in XML for simple cross-platform RPC—lighter than SOAP, though with a weaker type system.
Mechanism
The HTTP POST body is XML: a methodCall holds the methodName and params, each param encoding its value in a type element (int/string/struct/array/...). The response is a methodResponse.
Use cases
- Legacy blog APIs (WordPress)
- Simple cross-platform RPC
- Historical web services
