TCP Vegas
TCP Vegas detects congestion from RTT changes rather than loss, comparing actual against base RTT during congestion avoidance to shrink the window early.
Purpose
It detects congestion before buffers overflow, avoiding loss; it is smoother than Reno but unfair when competing with it.
Mechanism
Each RTT it measures throughput and computes diff = (expected - actual) * baseRTT: the window grows when diff < α, shrinks when diff > β, and holds in between. The α/β thresholds control sensitivity. It is delay-based rather than loss-based.
Use cases
- Low-latency congestion control
- RTT-based delay detection
- A research algorithm
