UPnP IGD
UPnP IGD (Internet Gateway Device) lets internal devices automatically request port mappings from the router, simplifying NAT traversal.
Purpose
It lets internal applications (games, P2P) create port forwarding rules on the router automatically, with no manual configuration.
Mechanism
A device discovers the IGD via UPnP and calls the AddPortMapping SOAP operation to ask the router to map a public port to its internal endpoint. The router creates the NAT rule automatically.
Use cases
- Game console port forwarding
- Automatic NAT for P2P
- Home networks
