UBJSON Marker

A UBJSON marker is a 1-byte type marker character (e.g., i=int8, I=int16, s=string, M=map) prefixing every value to identify its type.

Purpose

To identify value types with a single-byte marker in UBJSON, letting parsers work self-descriptively without a schema.

Mechanism

Every value starts with a 1-byte marker: i/I/l/L = signed int8/16/32/64, U = uint8, d/D = float32/64, s/S = string, Z = null, T/F = true/false, M = map, A = array, C = char. Optimized containers may add a $ type marker and a # count.

Use cases

  • Self-describing UBJSON parsing
  • Streaming binary JSON
  • Compact type markers
