TeX

TeX is the typesetting system designed by Donald Knuth, using a macro language for precise document layout; it is the base engine of LaTeX and ConTeXt.

Purpose

To provide professional-grade document typesetting and math formula rendering, the cornerstone of academic publishing.

Mechanism

TeX is both a macro-expansion language and a typesetting engine: it reads .tex source, runs macro expansion and typesetting algorithms (line breaking, pagination, math layout), and outputs DVI/PDF. Knuth's line-breaking algorithm optimizes globally via dynamic programming.

Use cases

  • Academic document typesetting
  • Mathematical formulas
  • Book typesetting
