SVG Path

An SVG path describes a vector graphic outline with a command string in the d attribute (M/L/C/Z, etc.); it is the most powerful SVG shape element.

Purpose

To describe arbitrary vector paths (lines, curves, arcs) with a compact command string for icons, charts, and animation.

Mechanism

The d attribute holds a command sequence: M/m = moveto (absolute/relative), L/l = lineto, C/c = cubic Bezier, Q/q = quadratic Bezier, A/a = arc, Z/z = closepath. Each command takes coordinate parameters.

Use cases

  • Drawing vector icons
  • Data visualization
  • Map paths
