SPDY
SPDY was Google's experimental web protocol that introduced multiplexing, header compression, and server push—the direct predecessor of HTTP/2.
Purpose
It validated the optimization directions for HTTP/1.1; its multiplexing and header-compression designs evolved directly into HTTP/2.
Mechanism
It layered a SPDY framing protocol over TLS, multiplexing streams over one connection, compressing headers with zlib, and pushing from the server. NPN negotiated SPDY. It was deprecated in 2015 in favor of HTTP/2.
Use cases
- Proving out the HTTP/2 design
- Historical experimental protocol
- Web performance research
