SM3

SM3 is the 256-bit cryptographic hash function of the Chinese national standard (GB/T 32905-2016); structurally similar to SHA-256 but with different round functions and constants.

Purpose

The Chinese commercial cryptography standard hash, used with SM2 signatures and the SM9 national crypto algorithm family.

Mechanism

Merkle-Damgård structure, 64 rounds, 32-bit words; the compression function uses message expansion W and W', round functions FF/GG, rotate-left, and constants T_j. Outputs 256 bits.

Use cases

  • SM2 signatures
  • Chinese commercial cryptography
  • National crypto compliance
