Shabal

Shabal is a SHA-3 competition submission by Bresson et al., based on the provably secure PGV mode, using an ARX round function.

Purpose

A SHA-3 competition candidate with a provable security bound, its structure extends the PGV single-block-length mode.

Mechanism

The state contains A (input-dependent), B (chaining value), C (previous chaining value); each round updates A/B with add-rotate steps and XORs in C, with the message and chaining value injected. C shifts between rounds to provide forward security.

Use cases

  • SHA-3 competition submission
  • Provable security
  • ARX hash
