SHA3-Keccak

SHA-3 Keccak designates the Keccak sponge instantiation parameters used by the SHA-3 standard, which differ subtly from the original Keccak submission in the padding rule.

Purpose

Standardizes Keccak's parameter choices, ensuring interoperable consistency between SHA-3 and the original Keccak proposal.

Mechanism

SHA-3 uses the Keccak[1600] sponge with capacity c=2×output length, rate r=1600−c, and padding 0x06...0x80 (original Keccak used 0x01...0x80). The permutation and round function are otherwise identical.

Use cases

  • SHA-3 standard implementations
  • NIST-compliant hashing
  • Sponge function instantiation
