SHA-512/t

SHA-512/t is the arbitrary-length truncated variant of SHA-512 (t<512): after extra preprocessing modifies the initial value, the output is truncated to t bits.

Purpose

Provides SHA-512's speed on 64-bit-word platforms where non-standard output lengths (e.g. 256, 224) are needed.

Mechanism

First runs SHA-512 on a specific string to compute the modified initial value IV', then runs SHA-512 on the message with IV', truncating to the high t bits. t=256 gives SHA-512/256, t=224 gives SHA-512/224.

Use cases

  • 64-bit platform fast hashing
  • Non-standard digest lengths
  • SHA-512/256 alternative
