SDP
SDP (Session Description Protocol, RFC 8866) describes a media session's codecs, ports, protocols, and other parameters in text lines, used for negotiation in SIP/RTSP/WebRTC.
Purpose
It describes and negotiates media parameters when a multimedia session is set up, letting both ends agree on codecs and transport.
Mechanism
Text lines take the form key=value: v= version, o= origin, s= session name, c= connection IP, m= media type/port/protocol/format, and a= attributes (the rtpmap codec mapping). Negotiation follows the SDP offer/answer model.
Use cases
- WebRTC media negotiation
- SIP VoIP sessions
- RTSP streaming
