Runbook

A runbook is an operations manual documenting procedures for common tasks: deployment, scaling, failure recovery, backups, and more.

Purpose

Standardize operations, reducing human error and knowledge silos.

Mechanism

Each operation records preconditions, steps, verification, and rollback. Can be automated (executable runbooks). On-call engineers follow runbooks when handling alerts. Updated as systems evolve.

Use cases

  • Operations standardization
  • On-call support
  • Knowledge transfer
