RTCP
RTCP (RTP Control Protocol, RFC 3550) periodically reports statistics for RTP streams—loss rate, jitter, RTT, and more—for quality monitoring and adaptation.
Purpose
It lets RTP receivers feed reception-quality statistics back to senders, enabling congestion-adaptive encoding and multi-source synchronization.
Mechanism
Receivers periodically send Receiver Reports (RR) with loss fraction, highest sequence number, jitter, last SR timestamp, and RTT estimate. Senders emit Sender Reports (SR) with transmission statistics. SDES carries source descriptions.
Use cases
- WebRTC quality feedback
- VoIP call quality
- Adaptive bitrate
