RSS

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML feed format that describes content updates with <channel> and <item>, widely used for blogs and podcasts.

Purpose

To give content publishers a simple XML subscription format so readers can aggregate updates from many sources.

Mechanism

The XML has an <rss> root with a <channel> containing title, link, description, and multiple <item> elements. An item contains title, link, description, pubDate, guid, and more. RSS 2.0 supports extension namespaces.

Use cases

  • Blog subscription
  • Podcast directories
  • News aggregation
