REST
REST (Representational State Transfer) is a web architecture style proposed by Roy Fielding: resources identified by URIs are manipulated with HTTP methods, with stateless, cacheable interactions.
Purpose
It gives web APIs a simple, cacheable, stateless communication style built on HTTP standards, and it is the de facto standard for web APIs.
Mechanism
Resources are identified by URIs; HTTP methods (GET/POST/PUT/DELETE/PATCH) express the operation; interactions are stateless, and responses can declare cacheability. The HATEOAS constraint lets clients discover follow-up actions through links.
Use cases
- Web API design
- Microservice HTTP communication
- Mobile APIs
