Rectangle Attack
The rectangle attack is a chosen-plaintext variant of the boomerang attack that replaces boomerang queries with chosen-plaintext pairs, improving data efficiency.
Purpose
It achieves boomerang-style attacks where only an encryption oracle (not decryption) is available, lowering data complexity.
Mechanism
It follows the same two-differential splicing idea as the boomerang but builds the middle matches directly from chosen-plaintext pairs, without decryption queries. The probability analysis matches the boomerang’s, but data collection is more efficient.
Use cases
- Reduced-round AES attacks
- Block-cipher security evaluation
- Differential attack improvements
