Radix64

Radix64 is the Base64 variant used by OpenPGP, adding a 24-bit CRC check, with = padding and line folding.

Purpose

It transports binary data over ASCII channels with integrity checking, used for textual export of PGP signatures and keys.

Mechanism

Binary data is mapped 3 bytes to 4 characters onto a 64-character alphabet, 76 characters per line; the output ends with = padding plus a 4-character CRC24 checksum prefixed by =.

Use cases

  • OpenPGP signature block encoding
  • PGP public key export
  • ASCII armor format
