QUIC
QUIC is a UDP transport protocol designed by Google and standardized at the IETF, integrating TLS 1.3, multiplexed streams, and 0-RTT, and it is the foundation of HTTP/3.
Purpose
It provides low-latency reliable transport over UDP, eliminating TCP head-of-line blocking and handshake delay, with connection migration support.
Mechanism
UDP datagrams encapsulate QUIC packets containing independent stream frames and ACKs. The handshake integrates TLS 1.3 (1-RTT on first contact, 0-RTT on resumption). Connections are identified by a connection ID rather than the 4-tuple, surviving IP changes without a break.
Use cases
- The HTTP/3 transport
- Low latency on mobile networks
- Gaming and real-time communication
