PCP
PCP (Port Control Protocol, RFC 6887) is the IETF-standardized successor to NAT-PMP, supporting IPv6 and richer port mapping control.
Purpose
It provides a standardized port mapping control protocol for NATs and firewalls, replacing NAT-PMP and parts of UPnP IGD.
Mechanism
Over UDP, the client sends MAP/PEER/ANNOUNCE operations to the PCP server to request mappings, and the server responds with the allocated public endpoint. IPv4/IPv6, lifetimes, and re-mapping are supported.
Use cases
- Standardized NAT port mapping
- IPv6 NAT control
- Firewall traversal
