Panama Variant

Panama variants are improved schemes based on the Panama stream cipher/hash design; the original Panama was proposed by Daemen and Clavier.

Purpose

Researches improvements to the Panama structure to fix known collision weaknesses — precursor research to the sponge construction.

Mechanism

State of 8×32-bit words, 17 rounds of θ/π/γ/σ permutation mixed with a message buffer. The original Panama was found to have collision weaknesses; variant research improves the permutation and buffer interaction.

Use cases

  • Hash design research
  • Sponge construction precursor
  • Stream cipher hashing
