OpenMath

OpenMath is an XML-based semantic standard for encoding mathematical objects, complementary to MathML Content, emphasizing strict semantics over presentation.

Purpose

To exchange unambiguous, strictly semantic representations of mathematical objects between computer algebra systems and applications.

Mechanism

It describes math objects with an <OMOBJ> root and <OMA> (application), <OMV> (variable), <OMI> (integer), and <OMS> (symbol, referencing a Content Dictionary) elements. Content Dictionaries define symbol semantics.

Use cases

  • Computer algebra system interoperability
  • Mathematical knowledge bases
  • Strict semantic exchange
