MQTT
MQTT is a lightweight publish/subscribe messaging protocol designed by IBM, optimized for low-bandwidth, unreliable networks (IoT) with a minimum header of just 2 bytes.
Purpose
It delivers low-overhead, reliable messaging for IoT devices and sensor networks, with QoS levels and last-will messages.
Mechanism
Clients connect to a broker and publish/subscribe to topics (hierarchical wildcards). QoS 0 is at-most-once, 1 at-least-once, and 2 exactly-once. The last-will message is published by the broker when a client disconnects unexpectedly.
Use cases
- IoT device communication
- Sensor data reporting
- Smart homes
