MathML

MathML is the W3C-standard XML markup language for mathematical formulas, using elements such as <mrow>/<mfrac>/<msqrt> to describe formula structure and presentation precisely.

Purpose

To represent math formulas on the web and in documents with semantically precise XML, supporting rendering and screen readers.

Mechanism

Presentation MathML uses <mrow> (row), <mfrac> (fraction), <msqrt> (root), <msub>/<msup> (sub/superscripts), and others to describe presentation. Content MathML uses <apply>, <plus>, and the like to describe semantics.

Use cases

  • Web math formula rendering
  • Formulas in academic documents
  • Educational content
