Large Allocation
The Large-Allocation header tells the browser the page will allocate a lot of memory, triggering a 64-bit process to avoid 32-bit address-space exhaustion crashes.
Purpose
To request a 64-bit process for memory-heavy web apps (games, visualization) on 32-bit browsers, avoiding OOM crashes.
Mechanism
The server sends Large-Allocation: <bytes>; if the browser is 32-bit and a 64-bit process is available, it reloads the page in a new 64-bit process with a larger address space.
Use cases
- Memory-heavy web apps
- 64-bit browser processes
- OOM defense
