Key Recovery Attack
A key-recovery attack aims to reconstruct a cipher’s key from known plaintext-ciphertext pairs or oracle access, the ultimate goal of cryptanalysis.
Purpose
It measures a cipher’s practical security; key recovery complexity should approach the brute-force bound of 2^k.
Mechanism
Differential, linear, or algebraic distinguishers determine round-key bits and peel rounds backward to recover the master key; alternatively, weak keys or weak implementations are brute-forced within a reduced search space.
Use cases
- Block-cipher security evaluation
- Cipher competition analysis
- Weak-implementation detection
