JSON Pointer

JSON Pointer (RFC 6901) identifies a node inside a JSON document with a /key/0-style string; it underlies JSON Patch.

Purpose

To reference any node of a JSON document precisely with a concise string, for patches, references, and partial updates.

Mechanism

A /-separated sequence of reference tokens navigates from the root: /foo/bar selects root.foo.bar, with / escaped as ~0 and ~ as ~1. The empty string "" points to the root.

Use cases

  • JSON Patch path references
  • JSON Schema error locations
  • Partial document updates
