JH

JH is a sponge hash submitted by Hongjun Wu that reached the second round of the SHA-3 competition, using a 1024-bit state and 42 rounds of an AES-like permutation.

Purpose

A SHA-3 competition candidate providing 224-512 bit variable output; the sponge structure resists length extension.

Mechanism

Sponge construction: the 1024-bit state is split into left/right 512-bit halves; each round applies 8 parallel AES rounds to the right half, then XORs and swaps with the left half. After 42 rounds the digest is squeezed.

Use cases

  • SHA-3 competition submission
  • Sponge hash research
  • Cryptographic competitions
