IP Fragment
An IP fragment is a single data unit produced by IP fragmentation, carrying the original packet's ID, offset, and MF flag.
Purpose
It describes the structure and identification of fragmented packets so the destination can reassemble them correctly.
Mechanism
Each fragment carries a copy of the original IP header (total length set to the fragment length, the offset field set accordingly, and the MF flag indicating whether more follow) plus the portion of the original payload at that offset.
Use cases
- Understanding fragment structure
- Network analysis
- Firewalls
