IP Defrag
IP defrag, short for IP defragmentation, reassembles fragments into the original packet at the destination.
Purpose
It reassembles fragments at the destination or on a middlebox, restoring the complete IP packet for upper layers or inspection.
Mechanism
Fragments are buffered by ID and offset and stitched into the original packet once complete. Firewalls may inspect after reassembly to defeat fragmentation-based evasion.
Use cases
- Fragment reassembly
- Firewall security
- Network stacks
