INI Sections

INI sections use [section] headers to group key-value pairs; they are the organizational unit of an INI file.

Purpose

To group key-value pairs by section in INI configuration, avoiding key collisions and organizing related settings.

Mechanism

A [section] line defines a header, and subsequent key=value lines belong to it until the next header. The unnamed section (file start) is the DEFAULT section. Section names are usually case-insensitive.

Use cases

  • Windows configuration files
  • PHP php.ini
  • Git configuration
