HTTP/2
HTTP/2 is the binary-framed successor to HTTP/1.1, adding multiplexing, header compression (HPACK), and server push to solve head-of-line blocking.
Purpose
It multiplexes requests and responses in parallel over a single TCP connection, reducing latency and connection counts and speeding up page loads.
Mechanism
A binary framing layer lets one TCP connection carry multiple streams, each interleaving frames bidirectionally (DATA/HEADERS/PRIORITY...). HPACK compresses headers with static plus dynamic tables, and the server proactively pushes resources via PUSH_PROMISE.
Use cases
- Modern web acceleration
- The gRPC transport
- API gateways
