HTTP/1.1
HTTP/1.1 is the persistent-connection revision of the Web's foundational protocol, adding pipelining, chunked transfer, and the Host header, but it still suffers from head-of-line blocking.
Purpose
It provides the text-protocol framework for web communication; persistent connections cut handshake overhead, and it remains the most widely deployed HTTP version to date.
Mechanism
It is a text protocol of request/response line + headers + body. Persistent connections (Connection: keep-alive) reuse the TCP connection; pipelining allows back-to-back sends but responses must return in order (head-of-line blocking); chunked transfer (Transfer-Encoding: chunked) supports bodies of unknown length.
Use cases
- Web page and API communication
- CDN content delivery
- RESTful services
