gzip

gzip is the GNU implementation of the DEFLATE compression format (RFC 1952), adding header and trailer metadata (original size, CRC32, timestamp); it is the most universal compression tool on Unix.

Purpose

It provides cross-platform file compression and archiving, supported by virtually every system and HTTP implementation.

Mechanism

A DEFLATE compression core plus a 10-byte header (magic, method, flags, timestamp), an optional original file name, and a CRC32 + ISIZE trailer for verification.

Use cases

  • HTTP Content-Encoding
  • Unix file compression
  • Software package distribution
