gRPC
gRPC is a high-performance open source RPC framework from Google, built on Protobuf and HTTP/2, with support for streaming, interceptors, and multi-language clients.
Purpose
It provides efficient, strongly typed RPC between microservices—several times faster than REST/JSON—with bidirectional streaming support.
Mechanism
Services and methods are defined in .proto files and compiled into per-language stubs. HTTP/2 carries Protobuf-encoded requests and responses. Unary, server-streaming, client-streaming, and bidi calls are supported, and an interceptor chain handles auth, logging, and retries.
Use cases
- Microservice RPC
- Mobile APIs
- Internal service communication
