Gossip Protocol
The gossip protocol mimics rumor spreading: nodes randomly pick peers to exchange state, disseminating information network-wide in O(log N) rounds.
Purpose
To achieve scalable distributed information dissemination and membership management, used in Cassandra/Dynamo and others.
Mechanism
Each round a node picks k random peers to exchange state with (push/pull). Information spreads exponentially. Robust to network jitter, no central coordinator. Used for membership detection, anti-entropy repair, and cluster topology sync.
Use cases
- Cluster membership management
- Anti-entropy repair
- Distributed information dissemination
