Full Cone NAT
Full cone NAT is the most permissive NAT type: one internal endpoint maps to a fixed public endpoint, and any external host can send packets to the internal host through that public endpoint.
Purpose
It is the friendliest to P2P—any external host can reach the internal endpoint via the mapped public endpoint—making NAT traversal easiest.
Mechanism
The mapping (internal IP, internal port) → (public IP, public port) is fixed with no restriction on the external source. Packets from any external host to (public IP, public port) are forwarded to the internal endpoint.
Use cases
- P2P NAT traversal
- Game consoles
- VoIP
