TOML Frontmatter

TOML frontmatter uses a +++-delimited TOML block as the metadata of a Markdown document, a TOML alternative to YAML frontmatter.

Purpose

To use TOML's strict types and syntax in Markdown metadata, avoiding YAML's implicit type inference.

Mechanism

The file starts with +++ opening a TOML block, a second +++ closes it, and the Markdown body follows. Hugo supports TOML frontmatter, parsed as a TOML object.

Use cases

  • Hugo content metadata
  • Strictly typed frontmatter
  • Markdown document headers
