ECHO

ECHO is a SHA-3 competition submission: a wide-pipe sponge hash built on AES round functions, exploiting AES-NI hardware acceleration.

Purpose

A SHA-3 competition candidate that reaches high throughput on AES-NI-capable CPUs via hardware acceleration.

Mechanism

The 2048-bit state is organized as an 8×8 matrix of AES states; each big round comprises 8 AES rounds (BigMixColumns) plus byte mixing, accelerated by AESENC instructions.

Use cases

  • SHA-3 competition submission
  • AES-NI accelerated hashing
  • Wide-pipe sponge
