Disaster Recovery
Disaster recovery is the ability to restore service after site/region failure, measured by RPO (data loss) and RTO (recovery time).
Purpose
Ensure business continuity under major failures, with quantified recovery targets.
Mechanism
RPO: the maximum data-loss time window tolerated (e.g., 5 minutes). RTO: the maximum recovery time tolerated (e.g., 1 hour). Strategies: cold standby (low cost, high RPO/RTO), warm standby (data synced), hot standby/active-active (near-zero RPO/RTO). Cross-region replication.
Use cases
- Business continuity
- DR planning
- RPO/RTO
