Design Pattern

Design patterns are reusable summaries of object-oriented design experience, divided into three categories: creational, structural, and behavioral.

Purpose

Apply mature design experience to common design problems, improving code maintainability.

Mechanism

Creational (factory, singleton, builder): object creation. Structural (adapter, decorator, proxy): structural composition. Behavioral (observer, strategy, command): object interaction. The 23 GoF patterns are the classic set.

Use cases

  • Object-oriented design
  • Code architecture
  • Team communication
